Main Stars ~ Christmas in Mexico

For this Main Star I decided to do Mexico because I thought that this would be quite interesting.

Here is what I found out:

Christmas In Mexico Is celebrated during a season Which starts in early December to January the 6th with one other related event on February the 2nd

Las Posadas is a nine-day celebration that originated in Spain and is now celebrated in Mexico. It begins on December 16th and ends on December 24th. This has been a Tradition in Mexico for over 400 Years. This Is one of the Catholics traditions but some Latinos (A religion) do it as well
Their Christmas season starts with some celebrations in honor of a women called the Virgin of Guadalupe. On December the 3th a nine day Novena (A latern word: Novem meaning Nine ) Is started In honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe whitch ends on her feast day December the 12th
The most important event related to this is the pilgrimage (Which means journey) to her basilica (church) in the north of Mexico City, with people coming to pay respects.. The area in and around the basilica (church) begin to crowd with lights, fireworks and indigenous dancing starting at dusk on December 11 which goes on all night and into the next day.

I really enjoyed learning about this countrys Christmas celebrations and I think that it was quite cool how they have more than one celebration.

The Great Trade Off Game

In PrEP we Learn LOTS about money and I love maths so some of the things that I have learned are really fun

  1. how to use a calculator in a way to add up money and I have always wanted to learn how to do that.
  2.  I have also learned that if you want money in the real world you have to work for it and if you are slack they can doc your pay I already new this but now it is much more realistic.
  3.  In the years before 2014 in doing PrEP I have never even had the idea to doc your pay and I only thought that teachers can doc your pay but it turns out that C.E.O's can doc it as well.
  4.  I have also always wondered why we need money in the world put PrEP made me realise that if we did not have money then everyone would be taking more that there share!!

This game below is all about selling stuff to get more money to buy stuff and I think this is very creative.

This Was From Ages Ago But Oh Well!...

Main Stars ~ science experiment

Balloon Fizz-inflator Experiment

What you need:

Small plastic bottle
Funnel
Balloon
Baking Soda
½ cup vinegar
Teaspoon

I half filled the balloon with baking powder and put the vinegar in the bottle then carefully placed the balloon over the top of the bottle and let the baking soda drop into the vinegar.

The combination of the baking soda and vinegar created a gas called carbon dioxide.  The gas expanded and filled the bottle then moved up into the balloon and inflated it.

I learnt that the chemical reaction when you mix vinegar and baking soda (bicarbonate soda) creates carbon dioxide.

Main Stars ~ Fundraise For A Charity

Fundraising for a Charity
My family always gives to the Cancer Society because Mum says we never know when cancer could affect our family or friends.   But the main way we help charities is by giving to the Salvation Army and other church shops to help them raise money that they use to help people that are in need of food, clothes and accommodation.

I often have toys that I want to sell but Mum asks me to give them to one of the church shops so that some children who do not have very much can enjoy my toys.  At Christmas I always have to choose something to give to go under some poor childs Christmas tree.

Main Stars ~ Thing To Start At Grey Main

WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO START AT GREY MAIN SCHOOL
FILTERED WATER
I do not like drinking water that is not filtered as it tastes yuck so I would like to see filtered water available to all students.  We already had a time this year when the water was not able to be drunk and well filtered water would have been the perfect solution.
I have spoken to Colin at West Coast Water and he told me that he had installed water filters on the drinking fountains at another Greymouth primary school.  I would love to see this at Grey Main and asked Colin to get me some prices so that I can take this idea to the Board of Trustees and Friends of Grey Main School asking for their support.  When I get the prices I will be taking these to the Board and Friends of Grey Main to see if they will be able to fund this idea.

I believe that having filtered water at school would benefit all students and encourage them to drink more water which is a very healthy option.

Main Stars ~ create something

I was looking on my fridge and I saw my mainstars list and I was thirsty so I opened the fridge to get the milk. I had the almost empty milk out on the bench and I was getting the milk out and the thought struck me!! Why don't I make something out of the milk container so I went strait to google and these are things that I came up with!!

Main stars ~ interview someone over the age of 70

I decided to interview my Grandfather because he quite likes watching sport. ( He Loves League But Not Rugby so if you are a rugby lover then you should probably not read this )

Interview with:      Grandfather

Topic:                    The Difference in Sport

I chose to interview my Grandfather to find out the differences & changes in sport from when he was younger to now.

What sports did you play?
I played Rugby League, Rounders (Softball) and Bullrush

What sports did you watch and like?
My favourite sport was, and still is, Rugby League.  I wouldn't let my dog watch Rugby!

How did you get sports results?
As we did not have TV we listened to the games on the radio.  I remember Dad getting me up at 2am to listen to a test in the United Kingdom.  We also got results and write-ups in the Grey River Argus (local Grey Valley paper) and Grey Star.

Has technology changed sports?
Yes, definitely.  People only watch the top games and smaller clubs get missed out.

Are people more competitive now?
No.  People were more competitive as it was all about winning.  These days it is more about participation, especially with children.

Has sport become more about money rather than fun?
Yes.  Nobody got paid for playing sport and they weren’t greedy like some sports people today.

Overall comment:
Many more people played sport as they only worked Monday – Friday so weekends were free.  Not many people worked shift work and therefore they could get to practices and games.
I believe that people who play sport have a better outlook on life.  They learn how to win and lose and if you get knocked down you learn how to get up again.  I don’t like that some sports do not have winners because life is about winning and losing and children need to learn this.

Main Stars ~ create some art

For my Main Stars I decided to create a mural for the school and this is what I came up with!!

Trixie Belden Horse Facts

Horses

  • Horses are four legged mammals
  •  that are used for riding and pulling carts
  • there is the large working horses like clydesdales and shire that are called draught horses and they are used for pulling barrels of beer
  • smaller horses like shetland ponies are used for pulling carts of people for amusement
  • medium horses like frisian and Quarter horses are for shows
  • Most horses are used for shows and fairs
  • Dressage is a competition for horses and riders to show off!!
  • jumping is usually for medium or large horses and it is a competition
  • crosscountry is a competition and you are timed for how long it took and you have to go really fast and go over jumps
  • there is a dangerous horse legend called a kelpie ( not the dog!!) and it was said that it could turn into a horse or a man  and drown people

My Real Bare Bone story - The marshmallow cooker

W.A.L.T:Show not tell
and work on paragraphs (for next piece of writing)

The sun was setting for the night through a gap in the trees and the only thing that could be heard was an owl hooting in the distance, the waves from the lake rolling on to the beach and someone telling a story around a campfire. “It was a calm night just like tonight about 50 years ago and there was a boy scouts club having a camp. The only thing that could be heard was the sound of an owl in the distance, the sound of the waves crashing on the sand before them, the boys were cooking marshmallows just like us and then there was a rustle in the bushes most of the boys scouts of course were to lost in the song they were singing to hear so they just kept on singing and when the song had finished all of the boys got up and went to bed apart from 1 and he wanted to put out the fire so he decided he wanted to finish the bag of marshmallows and as he did so there was another rustle in the bushes and the boy yelled help. He was never seen again.”All of the boys were now oohhing and aarrrhhing at the story and the one boy put there hand up and asked “ How do you know this exactly?” “I was the boy who went missing best friend and I was one of the ones who heard the rustle in the bushes and I tried to persuade him not to stay and let the fire to just die out its self but he would not listen. Alright we better get an early night off you go so all of the boys got up and got there pj's on apart from one who did not listen to the story and was too busy to hear the sound of tents zipping a boys all bidding there fellows goodnight he was finishing off the bag of marshmallows when there was yet another rustle in the bushes the boy turned a large black horse with a man on its back. the man gestured for the boy to jump onto the horse. They flew away and lived happily ever after.
